How to Host Guests for the Weekend (or Whole Week!) Without Losing Your Dang Mind

We're highlighting clever tips and tricks for pulling off any holiday get-together without breaking a sweat. It's Your Party , after all, so you might as well enjoy it! With my family more than a thousand miles away in Louisiana, I’m normally the holiday house guest. But this past Thanksgiving (after a lot of lobbying), my mom, dad, and sister agreed to spend the holiday with me in New York. My fifth-floor walk-up wasn’t my parents’ idea of a vacation, so they opted for a hotel, but my sister wanted to stay with me. Read More >> from Food52 https://ift.tt/2FNqOlj

A Pear Tarte Tatin With an Unexpected Star Ingredient

We've partnered with Bosch , makers of high quality home appliances like the Benchmark side-opening wall oven, to share recipes, tips, and videos that highlight the little details that make a dish truly delicious. My first apartment in New York City featured mysterious smells that came up only through the closets, bold roaches, and a cozy mattress bed on the floor. My second, a gigantic step up, included my dear friend as a roommate, even bolder mice, and an alternative to the stairs that we lovingly referred to as “the smellevator.” Read More >> from Food52 https://ift.tt/2rfSPrs

All The Sweet, Sappy Holiday Movies We Can't Wait to Watch This Season

I’ve mentioned before how inviting friends over for a bottle of wine and a movie is one of my favorite ways to spend a Friday night. And as the holidays really kick into high gear—with cookie swaps and happy hours and office parties—nothing feels better, or more restorative, than a chill movie night at home dedicated to one of my favorite genres: Holiday Romance. Yes, sometimes we watch thrillers or dramas, but for the next couple of weeks, I’m dedicating movie nights to all the super sentimental, totally cheesy flicks that make December the best time of the year. There are the classics, like ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ and ‘White Christmas’, or fast favorites, like ‘The Holiday’ and ‘Just Friends’. Heck, I’m even queuing up made-for-TV specials, like last year’s sleeper hit, ‘A Christmas Prince’. Judge me if you want, but I'll be bingeing in bliss until 2019. How Hosting Shabbat Has Shaped My Queer & Jewish Identities

“We need more gay friends,” my husband Alex declared at dinner one night late last year. It seemed less like a complaint and more like prescriptive advice as one would pick up from Dr. Oz, like getting more fiber in your diet or burning anything in your fridge that contains lectins. “We have plenty of gay friends,” I shot back, only to realize after going through the virtual rolodex in my head that I responded prematurely. We did in fact have very few gay friends, most of which were exes that we were there out of convenience. As we’ve watched coworkers and acquaintances galavanting with their gaggles of gays, we realized that we wanted that same sense of queer community. Read More >> from Food52 https://ift.tt/2DQK1jr

Sheet-Pan Crispy Rice with Bacon Lets Your Oven Do Allllll the Work

If I had a band, we'd be called The Crispy Bits. We'd all wear our hair in gelled-up spikes ( Aaron's Party -style) and we'd dress in studded pant suits. Our concerts would sell out immediately—so long as we kept it under wraps that I was lip-syncing—each time tickets went on sale, because everybody loves the crispy bits. And for good reason. The crispy bits are textural magic, a welcome foil to any soft or squishy elements of a dish. Often (like with the brownie edges , or the top peaks of sheet-pan mac and cheese ) they're jam-packed with flavor, which I like to think is because they've had much of their extra moisture sucked out and only the salty or sugary, flavor-y parts remain. (Please don't fact-check that "science.") Read More >> from Food52 https://ift.tt/2SiWGj9

How to Make an Amazing Smoked Salmon Platter.

Image
Oh my gosh. Say hello to the best smoked salmon platter ever! My love for smoked salmon knows no bounds. Be it brunch or an appetizer – I am INTO it. Remember when I made these smoked salmon bagels a few years ago? I ate that for a few solid months straight. So delicious! On Christmas Eve, my uncle makes a fabulous smoked salmon platter that we share before dinner. It is so, so good and something I look forward to every year! And it’s fun because smoked salmon tends to be served most at breakfast – so this is a little treat. His platter is to die for and includes delicious things like capers (oh hi tart and briney foods that I adore!), everything seasoning, fresh dill – all the toppings. I’ve wanted to put something together for brunch ideas for you guys for the holidays, and this was at the top of my mind! It is incredible to serve with bagels, toast and crackers and always such a hit. It’s savory, rich, but also kind of light at the same time – if that makes sense. The key is

Skinny Mississippi Pot Roast

Image
I was never really a picky eater as a kid, but for some reason I had a serious aversion to pot roast. In fact, I disliked it so much that I eventually began to dread the sight of my mom’s Crock Pot. My mom made–and still makes– lots of other delicious things in her slow cooker . So, I’m not sure why the pot roast association was so extreme. Regardless, to this day, when my mom’s Crock Pot appears on the counter (still the same one from when I was a kid!), I get a weird feeling of dread. It’s funny that still happens because I actually love pot roast now! Why wouldn’t you: It’s a Crock Pot classic for a reason. Hearty, homey, filling, and super easy, it checks off all the boxes of any good slow cooker meal. Just toss a few ingredients in the pot, leave it alone all day, and when you come back, dinner is served. Not only that, but most good pot roast recipes also happen to be super economical. Leftovers will last you at least a few more meals, and they’re so easy to freeze if you don
