A Week In The Life, Vol 22.

Image
[Artwork by Danielle Coke ] This week has been absolutely heartbreaking, to say the least. It’s hard to believe that so many (including me) thought that “2020 would be such a great year!” and it seems like every day, we are hearing something more terrible than the day before. I am sick and heartbroken and outraged at the death of George Floyd and the many racial injustices that have gone on, frankly, the entire time I’ve been on this earth. My instagram has become a rather robotic space of food and recipes and it’s been years since I’ve shared much of anything nonfood related there. If you’ve read my blog for all the years I’ve been writing, I hope you know my heart.   I haven’t been staying silent on social media out of complicity, but rather because I didn’t want to come off as performative or seem as if I was virtue signaling, simply reposting something about these issues now when I haven’t publicly done so in the past. I don’t feel that only posting or reposting something on s

What to Eat This Week: 5/31/20

Image
Who else is feeling like it’s full blown summer now?! Lots of delicious options below for the week ahead… This week, let’s kick things off with the best ever tomato soup and a grilled cheese ! It’s one of the only soups I eat regardless of the season. It’s incredible. Fish tacos with mango margarita s alsa are up next for taco tuesday! They are light and fresh, even with the breading. If you’re all over grilling like I am, these f ilet and potato skewers with rosemary chimichurri are DELISH. They are pretty easy too! You can prep the potatoes ahead of time. My BLT chopped salad with corn, feta and avocado is a hugely popular recipe on the blog. It’s SO SO GOOD. Serve it with some toasted sourdough and it’s a great meal. Bruschetta chicken is next, which is one of my favorite ways to use tomatoes that aren’t perfect yet. It’s satisfying and a family fave. Finally, this loaded veggie supreme detroit style pizza is perfect for the weekend! For breakfast, I really want to ma

This Tokyo Restaurant Uses the Best Wagyu in the World

Image
At Oniku Karyu, chef Haruka Katayanagi exclusively uses kuroge wagyu  “It was when I was seven or eight, I was the first in a race on a sport day,” says Haruka Katayanagi, chef and owner of Oniku Karyu in Tokyo. “My father grilled wagyu steak for the first time. I still remember it clearly.” Chef Katayanagi took that memory and devotion to wagyu and brought it to Oniku Karyu. The restaurant features wagyu beef from all over Japan, but they are all of the kuroge variety, known to be the best breed of cattle in the world. The color, glossiness, softness, and marbling of kuroge wagyu is superior to other breeds, according to Katayanagi. After breaking down each piece of meat, the chef shows us how he makes different dishes from each cut, with painstaking attention to detail — from the thickness of a slice to the temperature of the water to a custom flour blend. The dishes include beef tongue stew, Japanese beef sirloin and Chateaubriand shabu-shabu, white beef tripe and white asparagu

Minneapolis Restaurant Owner Says ‘Let My Building Burn, Justice Needs to Be Served’

Image
Photo by KEREM YUCEL/AFP via Getty Images In response to the fire damage caused to their restaurant during the ongoing George Floyd protests, the owners of the beloved Bangladeshi restaurant Gandhi Mahal are still siding with the protesters Protests have broken out in Minneapolis and across the country in response to the death of George Floyd, who was suffocated by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who pushed his knee into the unarmed and begging man’s neck during an arrest. The unrest has resulted in looting and arson, causing some to be more concerned about the city’s property than the safety of its people. At least one business owner, however, is willing to sacrifice the structure of his restaurant for justice. Beloved Bangladeshi/Indian restaurant Gandhi Mahal has been damaged by fire during the Minneapolis protests, but in a viral Facebook post, the proprietary family remains staunchly on the side of the protesters. In the post, Hafsa, the daughter of owner Ruhel Isl

But that doesn’t mean you can’t do all that at home: There are tons of excellent companies that ship fresh seafood across the country. We asked seven chefs from Charleston to L.A. to Seattle and in between for their recommendations on where — and what — to order from seafood companies that ship nationwide. When It Comes to Pandemic Safety, My Food Co-op Does What Big Grocery Stores Can’t

May Favorites: Lifestyle.

A list of all the things I loved in May, quarantine edition! xo FOOD TJs Synergistically seasoned popcorn . This stuff is insane. INSANE, I tell you. It’s spicy but tangy, smoky, sweet and savory. It’s wild. Such a good snack. Dots pretzels . Many of you have mentioned that these are what you use for my pretzel crusted chicken fingers . I can’t get them locally, but I can find them on amazon. OMG. The ingredient list is not the best but they are absolutely incredible. Almost like buttery. And they are great for entertaining. Heavenly Hunks . This was a costco instacart purchase and it may have been the best buy during quaratine. I LOVE THESE. They are chewy and taste like a combo of a cookie and really delish granola bar. LOVE! FASHION Love tank pleated . Now that we’re back into warm weather, I’m re-obsessed with my love tanks from Lulu. They can never keep them in stock so if you check often, they will include new colors. They are so comfortable, breathable and flattering. Le

Without the Tourists, the Fate of Portuguese Food Is Unclear

Image
Portugal reopened restaurants on May 18, but dining rooms remain far from packed | NurPhoto via Getty Images Portugal is reopening, but its food scene is more reliant than most on tourists. So what happens now? Nowhere in Europe has tourism played as big a role in shaping the overall food scene as Portugal. Over the last several years there’s been a drastic spike in the number of travelers flocking to the Iberian country — tourism pumped 18 million euros into the local economy in 2019 alone (compare that to 9.4 million in 2014 ) — and a wave of businesses, including restaurants, opened in response. But the effects on the local food scene are bigger than profits. Before the approving gaze of the outside world fell upon it, traditional Portuguese cooking was, like many great cuisines, by and large considered the stuff of home eating, not serious restaurant fodder. “It’s not that we’ve never been very proud of our cuisine, quite the opposite,” says chef José Avillez, whose 18-restaura

3 Summery One-Skillet Dinners Because Washing Dishes Is Overrated

It's the end of the long workday (or the start of an extra-long week) and we're hungry. Like, "can't-think-straight" hungry. Luckily, Food52 contributor EmilyC wants to do all the thinking for us. In Dinner's Ready , her monthly column on weeknight wonders, she shares three simple, flavor-packed recipes that are connected by a single idea or ingredient. Stick with Emily, and you'll have a good dinner on the table in no time. Today, Emily shows us how to make summer dinners sing—using just one skillet. One-skillet dinners are alluring. What’s not to love about easy-to-prep, virtually mess-free meals assembled in one pan? I’ve long been a fan of this no-frills style of cooking—but cut to the eleventh week of quarantine, when I feel like I’ve cooked a gazillion-and-one dinners and washed as many dishes, and this approach seems downright essential . The Rib Rub Famed Charleston Pitmaster Rodney Scott Swears By

Image
Chances are you already have all the spices you need for this recipe Ask any Charleston local about Rodney Scott , and they’ll tell you that he smokes some of the best whole hogs in the state — and that they’re probably all too familiar with the multi-hour drive for a taste of Scott’s smokey barbecue. A barbecue legend and James Beard Award-winning pitmaster, Scott has overseen Rodney Scott’s BBQ since opening in 2017; before that, he worked the pits at his family’s restaurant in Hemingway, about two hours away. Scott’s locations in both Charleston and Birmingham, Alabama, opened to out-the-door lines. Fans were looking for familiar favorites like pulled pork sandwiches and pork rinds, only to be delighted with the addition of fried catfish and double stack burgers, and chicken wings. Those beloved pork rinds? They are doused in Scott’s rib rub, which he demonstrated live on Instagram as part of Eater at Home . Check out the recipe below, which you’ll also find in Scott’s forthc
