For Better, Juicier Lamb Chops, Use This Marinade

Table for One is a column by Senior Editor Eric Kim, who loves cooking for himself—and only himself—and seeks to celebrate the beauty of solitude in its many forms. This week: his favorite lamb chop marinade. "My dinners at home are startlingly simple," Marilyn Monroe said in a 1952 interview for Pageant Magazine . "Every night, I stop at the market near my hotel and pick up a steak, lamb chops, or some liver, which I broil in the electric oven in my room. I usually eat four or five raw carrots with my meat, and that is all. I must be part rabbit; I never get bored with raw carrots." Read More >> from Food52 https://f52.co/2wtlTOV

The Radical History of the Rainbow Cake

Stacked and decorated (we ended up going for a “naked” frosted effect), our rainbow layer cake looked like it came straight out of a magazine. For such an innocuous Instagram post , the entire thing was surprisingly elaborate. And I’m not just talking about having to bake so many layers, and ending up with pink-stained fingers for an entire week after. It also required staging our wedding-gift porcelain cake stand in front of some leftover cardboard as a makeshift background (we’re as crafty as we are fussy), ignoring that we only had five layers instead of six (sorry, blue), and brushing off the fact that we had somehow built it the wrong way round (V. G. Yor instead of Roy G. Biv). Gay cake! Gay cake! Gay cake! Gay cake! 🏳️‍🌈🍰 // 📷 (& styling & baking) by @usefultheory Read More >> from Food52 https://f52.co/2WdtsbQ

After Baking Desserts All Day, This Is What Stella Parks Craves for Dinner

Welcome to Recipe Off-Roading , where the recipe isn’t in charge—you are. In this series of articles, we’re celebrating how cooks take liberties in the kitchen, whether that’s substituting an ingredient, adapting a technique, or doubling the salt (because you’re wild like that). So buckle up and let’s go for a ride. Stella Parks is known for dessert. After graduating from the Culinary Institute of America, she went on to be named one of the country’s best new pastry chefs by Food & Wine , to become the “pastry wizard” at Serious Eats , and to win a James Beard Award for her book, Bravetart: Iconic American Desserts . This Buttery, Sugar-Crusted Pastry Is Easily the Best Snack in New York

I did not expect to fall in love with a kugelhopf this week. I didn’t expect to think about a kugelhopf, or even to say “kugelhopf” out loud. And I certainly didn’t expect to eat a generously sized version of the cake, still warm from the oven, in under one minute flat, before doubling back to buy a second. This Chocolate Tres Leches Cake Is Our Only Weekend Plan

Simple Cake by Odette Williams is as carefree as a cookbook gets: 10 cakes, 15 toppings, mix and match the recipes however the heck you want. This means 150 possibilities for us readers. And a lot of work for the author. “In the year that I wrote Simple Cake , I lost track of how many cakes I baked,” she told me. “It was a lot more than 150.” Read More >> from Food52 https://f52.co/2YZAwWi

The Pain and Pleasure of the ‘Fleabag’ Dinner Party From Hell

Image
We can’t get this classic awkward dinner party with a bloody twist out of our minds If you’re looking for explosive interactions between characters in fiction, look no further than a dinner party; from Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner to Big Night to the Real Housewives , entertainment has always looked to shared meals as an opportunity to explore -- and exploit -- tension. Consider The Office episode “ Dinner Party ,” where Michael invites his subordinates (and newly public couple) Jim and Pam to his condo for dinner with his increasingly unhinged girlfriend, Jan. Because of the mockumentary set-up of the show, we’re both there and not, free from the social hostage situation that these situations present and able to commiserate through the characters’ increasingly panicked glances to our proxy, the camera. If The Office dinner party is the appetizer in the dinner party from hell, the dinner that opens Fleabag ’s second season is the entree. That much is apparent from the very firs

An Unexpected Cleaning Trick You'll Use All Summer Long

It happens every year: I am completely unprepared for the first hot day of spring. In theory, I should know it’s coming—the trees are in full bloom, and it’s May, after all—but still, the unpredictability of New York weather has a way of disarming you against common logic. One day, I’m debating whether I should put my winter coat away, and the next, boom, it’s suddenly summer, and I’m not ready at all. I struggle most when it comes to seasonally appropriate footwear. Grilled Vegetable and Halloumi Skewers with Pistachio Pesto.

Image
Another Friday, another skewer ! Grilled vegetable skewers to be exact. I mentioned last week that I was in a skewer phase, and this time I’m giving you a leeeeettle bit more than an appetizer. With pesto again! I promise I’m not trying to be boring. I just can’t hold in all of these delicious recipes. And these aren’t just any old grilled vegetable skewers. They are served with grilled halloumi cheese AND pistachio pesto. My everything is so happy. To say that we’ve been obsessed with halloumi for the last few months would be an understatement. Ever since I made these hummus halloumi bowls (that you guys love too!), it’s been on my must-make list for other recipes. We cannot get enough. If it was up to me, I’d like to include halloumi in our weekly meal plan. And, I mean, I guess it IS up to me, but does my cheese consumption reeeeeally need to be that extreme? Don’t answer that. But ANYWAY. If you follow along on Instagram , you see that I’ve been grilling vegetables lik

The 14 Hottest New Restaurants in Cleveland

Image
From fried chicken sandwiches to koji-cured pastrami to fat wedges of salted caramel pie, these are the Cleve’s buzziest new bites Today, Eater returns to Cleveland, Ohio, to focus on 14 new restaurants and bars that have been garnering some serious hype. Once again, dining editor, cookbook author, and Cleveland resident Douglas Trattner has offered up his picks for the hottest openings of the past year. “It’s been a productive and diverse 12 months in terms of food and drink gains for Cleveland eaters,” says Trattner. “A pair of food halls finally gave locals two great places to graze, twin takes on new-Jewish delis opened up on opposite sides of town, and a Miami-based chef planted a flag in the Land. Add to that exciting new spots for everything from Korean barbecue and Chinese soup dumplings to tacos, pizza and sliders. It all gets washed down with a chic wine bar and bookish brewery that bucks current trends.” Here now, and in geographic order, the Eater Heatmap to Cleveland.

How Madhur Jaffrey Changed Indian Home Cooking in the West

Before Madhur Jaffrey became one of the most celebrated Indian cookbook authors in the world, she found herself at parties and PTA meetings in New York being approached by a surprisingly eager set of Americans. The sari she wore and the complexion of her skin likely made her the closest thing they had to an expert on India. There was one question on everyone’s mind: Could she recommend a restaurant that served good Indian food? At this point, Jaffrey had the unpleasant task of telling them that such a thing did not exist in New York or anywhere in America. Indian restaurants in the United States showcased almost none of the regional texture of India’s cuisine and seemed to fear their clientele would be put off by dishes deemed too unfamiliar.
