15 Edible Gifts From Costco That We Want to Eat Right Now

If you’re like me, you spend half of December grocery shopping, half of it present shopping and half of it cooking. Yes, I’m aware that my math is flawed, but that’s pretty much how it feels. And while shopping online has pretty much become standard, sometimes you need something now , or just need a stash of gifts ready to be pulled out at a moment’s notice (like when your neighbor shows up with a Bundt cake, and you don’t want to look like a schlub). There’s one thing we know to be true: pretty much everyone loves a thoughtful food gift—you simple can’t go wrong with giving something edible. Homemade is a great way to go, but there’s nothing wrong with a store-bought treat. And guess which of our favorite stores has a robust selection of food gifts? You guessed it: Costco. The beauty of it is that you can go grocery shopping and present shopping at the same time. Three cheers for efficiency over the holidays! Read More >> from Food52 https://ift.tt/2qJJUSw

The Best Holiday Cookie Recipes, According to Eater Editors

Image
Baking for others is a delightful pursuit. These are the recipes Eater editors reach for when cookies are in the cards. It’s cookie season, and it couldn’t have come soon enough. After the contortions of modified and shrunk-down Thanksgivings, it’s exciting to bake something meant for sharing. This year is an especially good one to double that batch and send cookies to family and friends. Eater conducted a cookie exchange experiment in which 12 editors sent all different types of holiday-ish cookies through the mail to see what survived best. The TL;DR is that no one type of cookie performed better than another — the key is to keep the cookies packed tight and well padded. Below, the Eater editors and writers who participated share why they chose the cookie recipes they did. Even if you’re not normally a baker, many of these recipes are simple enough to pull off. As executive editor Matt Buchanan says, “ What I’ve learned from this serendipitous experience is that baking cookies is

We Found the Best Instant Pot Cookbook

This review is part of our community-driven book tournament, The Big Community Book-Off . With your help, we’re finding the best books across categories (from bread to pasta, one-bowl to weeknight-friendly, and cake to cookies, to name a few), and putting them through a series of rigorous reviews—considered, tested, and written by none other than you. And so, let’s hand it off to our community members Sarah , Robin , and Rosa . Here are their reviews of your five favorite Instant Pot books—and their nail-biting verdict on which one reigned supreme. We came about our love for the Instant Pot in different ways. Sarah wanted to know if the Instant Pot was everything it was hyped up to be, and if it could save valuable cooking time between busy work shifts. Rosa bought the Instant Pot because a certain Instant Pot cookbook made her finally say, “yes!” Robin, like many of you, wanted the ability to cook time-intensive meals faster without sacrificing the integrity of the dishes, and to s

Restaurants Are Defying Indoor Dining Shutdowns to Survive Winter

Image
Photo: winnond /Shutterstock Plus, delivery workers are burned out, and more news to start your day Some restaurants are resisting shutdown orders as second COVID-19 wave surges As restaurants face a new round of indoor dining shutdown orders amid rising coronavirus cases and colder weather, some are choosing to stay open in spite of the legal and public health consequences, arguing that it’s the only way that their businesses can make it through the pandemic. Restaurants face fines, citations, and enforced closures if they don’t comply with dining bans, but it’s typically up to local authorities and health departments to police the offending businesses. For some owners, avoiding the loss of more business is worth the risk of staying open, the Wall Street Journal reports . “We are NOT trying to be rebellious or are anti-masks, anti-people’s health or any of the other nonsense. This is a decision out of survival,” owners of Lockport Stagecoach, an Illinois restaurant, wrote on F

How to Safely Mail Treats So They Arrive Fresh & Crumble-Free

Every year, at the start of December, my kitchen is transformed into a cookie making factory. I load up on butter, chocolate chips, nuts, vanilla extract, and a permanent fixture on the counter because I’m making dozens of batches each day. I do this because I’m obsessed with cookies, and two, I make up tins for pretty much everyone I know. Teachers, friends, acquaintances, and even the mail and garbage man get a big ol’ tin of cookies as a way to tell them all how much they mean to me. It makes the end of the year pretty darn sweet, and I can’t imagine not doing it. This year, I don’t have friends dropping by, I won’t be heading to the usual round of holiday parties, and I’m not really even meeting up for a friendly coffee. Hence, the opportunities to dole out my confections are limited. But that’s not stopping me. This year, I’m shipping far and wide so that no matter what, it still feels like the holidays. So, I stopped by my local post office to get the ins and outs of safely and

The One Pie to Rule Them All

Image
A simple process and tons of flavor make sweet potato pie a perfect beginner’s baking project Welcome to Ask Elazar , a column in which Eater staff writer Elazar Sontag answers your highly specific and pressing cooking questions. I’ve never in my life made a pie before, but in the spirit of taking on a baking project during quarantine, I’ve decided I’m going to make my first-ever pie for the holidays this year. Can you recommend a recipe that’s reasonably foolproof but that gives good holiday vibes? At the intersection of foolproof, low effort, and festive lives one perfect dessert: sweet potato pie. There is perhaps no simpler pie, and the payoff is tremendous, the sweet potatoes providing a rich custard-like texture that pumpkins just can’t deliver (even a mediocre sweet potato pie is, really, quite good). On the baking end, there are very few steps, and very little that can go wrong: Nearly all sweet potato pie recipes have you mix the filling in one bowl, before plopping it i

The Best Ways to Send Holiday Cookies in the Mail

Image
Turns out mailing cookies to your coworkers (and friends!) is easier than you think Almost all of our holiday traditions are imperiled by COVID-19. Boisterous family meals, glittery cocktail parties, and gatherings to exchange presents could all become super-spreader events. But there is one holiday tradition the pandemic can’t mess with: mailing cookies. The 2020 baking boom was one long training session for turning out dozens upon dozens of snickerdoodles, thumbprints, rugelach, and brownies in the last month of this shitty year. But after the cookies are made, what’s the best way to make sure they arrive in one piece? Twelve Eater staffers conducted a (somewhat) scientific experiment to determine which cookies travel best and which shipping methods ensure cookies arrive intact. Nothing ever has to be perfect, but in a year full of uncertainty, getting cookies from one end of the country to the other would be… nice. For mailing, the experiment settled on three methods, each of wh

Why (& How) I'm Stretching the Holiday Season This Year

A Full Plate is a column about family life and the home by contributing writer Laura Fenton , who explores the intersection of sustainable living and home design through a mother’s eyes. I have a confession: In years past, my family’s holiday celebrations often started with Christmas Eve and ended with Christmas Day. In the rush of juggling work, parenting, and housekeeping, I never had the time to make the holiday spirit last all week, leave alone all month (even present-wrapping was left for the eleventh hour, after everyone had gone to bed). There was a lot more room for joy on my holiday agenda. Read More >> from Food52 https://ift.tt/36kDbjP

How Zach & Zoe Sweet Bee Farm Harvests Honey for NYC Restaurants

Image
The family-run business believes in the powers of natural, local, and raw honey Zach & Zoe Sweet Bee Farm owners Kam and Summer Johnson started keeping bees thanks to their young son, Zach. As he struggled with allergies, Summer began to read up on the benefits of raw honey and exposing oneself to natural allergens. And after feeding their son a steady stream of raw honey, they decided to start making their own. “A lot of commercial honey is corn syrup, it doesn’t have the natural vitamins and minerals that natural raw honey has,” says Kam. “So we try not to be honey snobs, but we do want people to understand there’s a difference, and what we consume does matter.” The family learned about beekeeping and honey harvesting from their mentor and friend, “Uncle” Larry Saums, owner of Bee Flower & Sun Honey . They bought their bees from him five years ago, and continue to share bees, tips, and learnings with each other. “The biggest thing I learned from Larry is, you can’t rush
