14 Kitchen Storage Ideas You'll Wish You'd Known Sooner

I bought my first home at the beginning of the year—an amazing farmhouse that’s more than 100 years old—and while I absolutely love all the character in its wavy window panes and original hardwood floors, there’s one thing I’m less than thrilled about. The kitchen. Don’t get me wrong: it’s totally functional and gets the job done, but the room definitely lacks modern conveniences and efficient storage. For instance, the shelves in the cupboards are fixed at a too-short height that can’t fit bottles of olive oil, and the old-fashioned drawers don’t have gliders, so they’re always getting stuck. So naturally, I’m planning a number of upgrades to the space (some ASAP and others further down the road) and relying heavily on the help of Pinterest. Linen Isn’t Just For Beds—These Furniture Pieces Prove It

News flash: Linen is for far more than just towels and duvet covers (though don’t get me wrong, I love a good linen sheet set, too). Recently, I’ve majorly been lusting over linen furniture, which retailers are introducing in the form of lamps, nightstands, dressers, and more. All I can say is: Bring. It. On. In a sea of standard wood and white pieces, linen stands out and adds so much textured personality to any space, despite being neutral in color. Whether your style leans boho, grandmillennial , or California cool, you’ll be able to effortlessly incorporate a linen piece or two into your home. And the pros agree with my take. “Linen is a versatile material that can be styled in both formal and casual settings, and is beloved for its classic texture that never goes out of style,” says Maiden Home founder Nidhi Kapur . As a longtime home cook, former grocery buyer for a specialty food shop, and now recipe developer, my pantry remains much more well-traveled than I am—from Malaysian sambal and shrimp paste to Pragati turmeric from Andhra Pradesh, to Spanish extra-virgin olive oil and Basque peppers. 12 Beach Bag Essentials: Family Edition

I am a beach person to my core. I grew up near the water where my family would spend entire days. In my early 20s living in New York, I took the A train all the way to the Rockaways just to catch some waves. Luckily (or rather strategically) I married a beach person, so it was inevitable that we’d start a family that spends a lot of time together on the sand. However, I quickly learned that things get more complicated with little ones in the picture. Gone were the days of chill reading and packing light. As a mom, I had to worry about my son wandering off into the waves, eating sand, and making “soup” out of washed-up jellyfish. Read More >> from Food52 https://ift.tt/2R0zR8N

Mutual Aid May Be Last Year’s Most Enduring Legacy

Image
How mutual aid efforts — like Minneapolis’s Southside Food Share and Phillips Community Free Store — are combating food insecurity on their own terms I arrived in Minneapolis in July of 2020 to find buildings turned to rubble, people grieving, and a community rebuilding. During my first volunteer shift at Phillips Community Free Store , which was being run out of the Grease Pit Bike shop in South Minneapolis, tables were lined up outside, pop-up tents shading all manner of produce and household items, and a mountain of diapers that were ready to be given away. People took numbers and those numbers were called when it was their turn to come up to the tables and take what they needed. Cars lined the streets as parents with children in tow waited their turns. It was loud; our “customers” spoke mainly Spanish, Oromo, and Somali and younger members of the families would often translate their words into English. Those first few months, I learned a lot about what people look for and h

Pesto & Sourdough Meet in These Twisty Knots

A leavened, enriched dough is the perfect starting point to get creative in the kitchen. Of course, baking the dough straight away without any embellishment would be delicious enough—think brioche !—but it’s also a foundation that can be taken in myriad directions. I’ve folded, braided, cut, twisted, balled, laminated, and now knotted the basic dough, each yielding a completely different result. And the final shape isn’t simply an aesthetic affectation. It also serves to modify the final eating experience. In some cases, like with these savory pesto knots , it is a way to trap a delicious filling between layers of the tender, buttery dough. Why twist and knot the dough? When baking, the structure and shape of the treat is almost as important as the ingredients and process. Take, for example, a baguette, with its long and slender shape, compared to something like a boule, which is round and hefty. The smaller diameter of the former results in bread that bakes faster, as the oven’s hea

Seeds vs. Plants: A Buying Guide for Budding Gardeners

During the second half of May, I keep an eye on the weather forecast (even more obsessively than usual), because I have dozens of vegetable plants ready to be transplanted into the garden. Here in northeastern Pennsylvania, we can still get a late frost that would be fatal for my tender young plants. My garden is a mixture of plants from nurseries and ones that I started myself from seed, and whether you should grow from seed or buy plants very much depends on your individual situation. Root vegetables such as beets and parsnips don’t transplant well, and they should be directly seeded in the garden, as should be beans, peas, and leafy greens like lettuce and spinach. For all the others, here’s a list of factors to consider. Read More >> from Food52 https://ift.tt/2SvSr9p

A DIY Ottoman Makeover—With a Twist

As a designer, the question I’m asked most often is where I get my inspiration. And the answer is: from as many sources as possible—from fashion to food, music, and cinema. But some of my favorite inspirations have come from decorative objects I’ve acquired from local markets on my travels: Spanish tiles sourced from Valencia, brightly woven textiles bought at tiny shops in the side streets of Mexico City, and beaded necklaces from the beaches of Thailand. I love spotting the little details on some of these objects that I now have at home, and using those to spark ideas. Over the past few years, I’ve been collecting mini woven baskets from bazaars as far as Spain and Thailand, and have wanted to design a piece of furniture around them. Well, actually one basket in particular—bought from a market in Brooklyn and made by a Ghanian weaver—that boasts a glorious color combination of deep yellow and teal. A few weeks ago, I came upon the perfect vessel for the project: an old ottoman in ne

Can Meat Experts Ben and Brent Recreate Spam?

Image
The Meat Hook butchers try their hand at homemade canned meat “Quick disclaimer,” says butcher Brent Young in front of a stack of signature blue and yellow Spam cans. “Do not try this at home!” Ben Turley and Brent Young, of Brooklyn’s the Meat Hook, take on a new experiment in this episode of Prime Time : making their own Spam. But, as they explain, “canning is incredibly dangerous, and the USDA takes it incredibly seriously.” So leave this one to the meat experts, and simply enjoy their process. They open a can of Spam to start with a taste and texture test, and check out a list of the ingredients. They believe using pork shoulder and pieces of ham can get them close to the taste and texture of the original. They grind cubes of each along with ice, to help the meat bind, to get their mixture. Next, they add salt, sugar, pink curing salt, and sodium tripolyphosphate. Each of these ingredients serves an important purpose, whether it’s to help bind the meat, flavor it, to prevent ra

Need a Bottle of Natural Wine? The Gas Station Has You Covered.

Image
In some cities, the local gas station doubles as a boutique bottle shop, with wines and craft beers by small producers My dad is the kind of old-school character who arrives four hours ahead of departure time for a domestic flight from Miami to New York. All of his bills are paid via paper check, which he drops off in person. And, naturally, he’s a big believer in going into the gas station to pay the clerk directly before filling his tank with gas, putting zero trust in the card machines out by the pumps. And so, when I was home in Miami a couple of months ago, he didn’t even have to ask before I marched into the Mobil station on the corner of Coral Way and 32nd Avenue to ask the clerk to fill us up at number four. But when I opened the door, I had to take a beat to marvel at the collection of wines lining the metal racks inside. On shelves, next to six-packs of Corona Light and local plantain chips, were the wines I used to sell at the small, natural-focused New York wine sho

America Loves Gas Station Snacks. Here Are Some of the Finest by Region

Image
From Buc-ee’s Beaver Nuggets to 7-Eleven Spam musubi Whether we’re hitting them up during a marathon road trip or just a pit-stop during the weekly commute, gas stations are where America gets what it needs. For your car, that’s a few gallons of unleaded. For the rest of us, it’s something salty, sweet, crunchy, or highly caffeinated. But aside from a few constants (show us a fuel stop without jerky and Red Bull), the snacks, drinks, and often full meals available at gas stations vary greatly depending on where you are in the country; they’re dictated by local tastes, demographics, and plain old corn-fed culinary ingenuity. Here, then, Eater has compiled some of America’s favorite regional gas station indulgences, from gobs in Pennsylvania to breakfast pizza in Iowa to deep-fried burritos in Texas to Spam musubi in Hawai’i. Regardless of what your gas meter says, these are some of the bites worth pulling off the interstate for. The Northeast Stewart’s Shops Ice Cream, New
